CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

STRIP KNITTING AND AMBIDEXTERITY (Anna Zilboorg)          Saturday Full Day

Knitting in strips, attached as you go or knit together later, vastly increases designing possibilities as well as providing that rarest of knitting pleasures: instant gratification. Ambidexterity-- the ability to knit left-handedly as well as right-handedly-- makes many kinds of knitting more pleasurable: strips, entrelac, bobbles, heel turns etc.

This workshop will knit a mini-hat (a garlic cover?) in strips, joining and shaping as we go, to learn all the techniques necessary for a full size sweater. I'll also give out a pattern for a hat in strips that will involve many different techniques of joining as well as ambidextrous knitting.

Bring: Students should bring two or more colors of worsted weight wool (no black and good contrast!) and short straight needles of appropriate size (about 4.00mm/US 6). Also scissors and a darning needle.

Materials fee: $0

FIENDISHLY DIFFICULT STITCHES (Merike Saarniit)                 Saturday Full Day

Yes, these are stitches for the adventuresome knitter! Come explore unusual stitch manipulations that create exotic fabrics which evoke "gee - how'd you DO that?" reactions.  We'll look at what can designate a stitch as "difficult" and find ways to help make creating those stitches more efficiently. Some of the stitches presented are from Merike's old Estonian stitch libraries, not found elsewhere.

Bring: An ounce or so each of: Light colored AND Medium colored non-textured yarn with some elasticity (most cotton yarns have no elasticity) in no less than DK weight, no more than slightly bulky.  Knitting needles in size appropriate to yarn.  Some of the stitch patterns involve working the same row twice, so circulars (24") or DPNs are needed. And, of course, your usual knitting basket supplies - scissors, tapestry needle, etc. If you have them, Merike recommends Bryspun needles (available at Knit On) for easier stitch manipulation since they have a "scooped" point to them.  Otherwise, do choose your pointier needles over the more rounded tipped ones. AND  (optional, but highly recommended) - Do look through your stitch libraries or pattern books and bring an example (or two or three) of what look like "fiendishly difficult stitches."

Materials fee: $0

NO SEW SWEATER (Lorain Pettit) Saturday Full Day

Participants will make a sample size sweater in class. They will then create a custom formula using the yarn, needles and stitch pattern desired to make a full size sweater.

Bring: A crochet hook, double pointed and 16 inch circular needles in a size appropriate for the yarn you wish to use, stitch markers, scissors and a notebook and pen or pencil. 2-3 ounces of yarn for the sample sweater will also be required.  For the full size sweater, a 6 inch square sample swatch in the stitch pattern desired is highly recommended for best results.

Materials fee: $2.00 for materials, $5 if you need sample yarn.

HOW TO SELECT COLOR PALETTES (Nancy Shroyer)      Saturday Morning

Choosing colors that will go together well in knitting or for any purpose can be confusing or even scary if you don't have that in-born color sense. This class will give the student a set of formulas that are easy to follow to build a color palette. All they have to do is choose ONE color they like and build on it.  Students should know how to knit. Beginners can do Garter Stitch others can do a slip stitch or Fair Isle. Crocheters can do single or double crochet, non knitters can use colored pencils (provided by the instructor). Students will choose 3 - 7 colors and knit a sample with their chosen colors.

Bring: US 3 knitting needles, tapestry needle

Materials fee: $12.00 - covers: book How to Select Color Palettes., 5" color wheel, yarn required to knit samples.

MAGIC LOOP (Pam Black) Saturday Morning

No more cold feet! If you have always wanted to learn how to knit socks, but the thought of knitting with all of those toothpicks, a.k.a. doubled pointed needles, has frustrated you, then you are invited to come and learn the Magic Loop technique.  Using Magic Loop allows the knitter to create small circumference items, such as socks, hats, sleeves or mittens, on one long circular needle.  Students will knit a baby sock in class. In this class, you will learn: long-tail cast on, knitting in the round, slip stitch - used on the heel flap, picking up stitches - along the edges of the heel flap, two types of decreases - SSK and K2tog, short rows - used in turning the heel, kitchener stitch and translating a pattern written for double pointed needles to Magic Loop.

Bring: Yarn of choice - sock/fingering, sport, DK, or worsted, tapestry needle - with eye large enough for yarn selected and one 36 to 40 inch circular needle, in size appropriate for yarn. (Select a needle with a flexible cable and a smooth cable-to-needle join such as an Addi Turbo.)

Materials fee: $0

EASY ILLUSION KNITTING (Cathy Gill) Saturday Morning    (Repeats Saturday Afternoon)

Now you see it, now you don't! Illusion knitting creates a fabric which, when viewed from one angle creates a design, but when viewed from another angle, *POOF* the design disappears. Very cool.  Unfortunately, actually knitting an illusion pattern can cause one's hair to disappear as one rips it from one's head.  Not anymore! Cathy Gill has developed a simple technique for illusion knitting that has never been seen before (pun intended). Instructions will be provided in BOTH written and charted forms.

Bring: 16" circular needle in size US 7, US 8 or size needed to obtain a gauge of 51/2 - 6 spi in worsted weight wool, a row counter and stitch markers.  You will also need either 2 skeins each of black and yellow or orange worsted weight wool (Cascade 220 recommended) to complete the design started in class (a scarf with a cat) or two skeins of worsted weight wool in contrasting colors if you don't want to knit the whole scarf.

Materials fee: $0

KNITTING TIPS, TRICKS & TOOLS (Nancy Schroyer)             Saturday Afternoon

40 years of knitting experience and problem solving have resulted in a store of knowledge. Nancy uses this to bring you all kinds of simple solutions to common problems. The class will cover: A better buttonhole and button spacing; lengthening or shortening a finished project; better fitting armholes, neckbands and shoulders; how to exchange yarns successfully; making I-cords and twisted cords; measuring for a better fit; estimating yardage for a project; useful knitting tools from other sources and lots more! At the beginning of the class, during the introductions, Nancy will ask each person if s/he has a specific question or problem that need to be solved. Your problem will be addressed during the class!

Bring: Homework swatches, needles and yarn - see below, crochet hook in the approximate same size as was used for yarn in homework, cloth tape measure at least 60" long, calculator, scissors and a tapestry needle.

Materials fee: $10.00 - covers workbook, tools, and samples

Homework: Using a worsted weight yarn (handspun is OK) and appropriate needles for the yarn, knit two 4 inch square swatches in stockinette stitch.  One of them you can bind off, but leave the second one still on the needle.  Make sure you have about an ounce of yarn left over to use in class.

2 SOCKS ON 2 CIRCULAR NEEDLES (Pam Black)                              Saturday Afternoon

Never suffer from SSS (Single Sock Syndrome) again!  Start and complete both socks at the same time.  Knit both socks of the exact same length, from cuff through sole. Make all increases and decreases match, row by row, on both socks.    This technique also lends itself to knitting two sweater sleeves or two pant legs at the same time. Students will knit a pair of baby socks in class.  You will also learn how to translate a pattern for double pointed needles to the 2 on 2 technique.

Bring: Yarn of choice, sock/fingering, sport, DK or worsted; two 24 to 32 inch circular needles, in size appropriate for yarn, blunt tapestry needle with eye large enough for yarn selected.

Materials fee: $0

EASY ILLUSION KNITTING (Cathy Gill) Saturday Afternoon    (Repeat of Saturday Morning Class)

STASH REDUCTION VEST - KNIT TO FIT YOU (Merike Saarniit)  Sunday Full Day

In addition to swatching your stash yarns in a great slip stitch and garter pattern, you''ll take an existing vest pattern and adjust it for a perfect fit. Come prepared to swatch, measure, and make a sloper so you can go home with a custom pattern to fit both you and your stash.

Bring: One ball (partial balls are fine) each of a variety of stash yarns in at least 6 different colors.  They can be in different textures, colors and weights - except for super bulky; assorted sizes of knitting needles; calculator; permanent marker; eight safety pins; scissors; pencil and eraser and measuring tape. Also bring a light colored lightweight sweatshirt or T-shirt that fits you loosely. Over-sized better than one that is snug anywhere (you'll be cutting this up, so don't bring your favorite one!).

Materials fee: $0

KNIT TO FIT (Nancy Shroyer) Sunday Full Day

In this class, you will learn how to measure correctly, determine the size to knit, discusses ease and yarn construction and appropriateness of yarn to project.  You will also learn how to adjust commercial patterns for variations in gauge and how to make needle and yarn exchanges, still using the original pattern as well as how to measure yarn and exchange yarns successfully and how to knit a proper swatch. You will learn how to make a "map" of a sweater based on your measurements and gauge. From this map, you can knit any style sweater or vest in any size. There are lots of variations that are possible. Each student will design her/his own sweater based on their knitted swatch. Also included are instructions on how to determine the amount of yarn to use for any project.

Bring: Cloth tape measure, calculator, pen or pencil, paper for notes, homework and particular patterns that you may want to adjust or ones that have already presented you with problems. If there is time at the end of the workshop, we will go over these.

NOTE: Please wear something that is not too bulky, like a T-shirt or turtleneck, so that we can take measurements comfortably. Please do not be embarrassed by this. I have taught this class many times and nobody cares or remembers what size you are.

Homework:

Before coming to the workshop, knit a swatch as follows:

With size #7 #8, OR #9 needles and any worsted weight yarn, cast on 24 stitches.

Work 4 rows in garter stitch (knit every row),

Row 1: knit

Row 2: knit 2, purl 20, knit 2

Work 4 inches for the above 2- row pattern, and then work 4 rows in garter stitch. Bind off loosely.

Materials fee: $18.00 - includes a 50 page workbook

BEYOND STRIPES:  KNITTING WITH VARIEGATED YARNS (Susan Winkler) Sunday Full Day

Learn new techniques for knitting with variegated yarns. These yarns can do so much more than make stripes! You will learn to create new and colorful patterns.  You will make a sampler book using techniques such as slip stitches, Fair Isle, mitered squares, lace and more.

Bring: Knitting needles US size 2, 3 or 4

Materials fee: $25 (includes yarn and sample book)

SHAWLS 3 WAYS (Lorain Pettit) Sunday Full Day

Participants will be given instructions and time for knitting three differently shaped shawls in miniature form. Instructions for full size shawls will also be given.

Bring: A notebook and pen or pencil, needles size 8 to 11 (whichever is comfortable for you) and sample yarn if you have it. Needles should be 2-3 sizes larger than the one recommended on the ball band. Instructor will have sample yarn available if you need it.

Materials fee: $2.00 for printouts plus any sample yarn (nominal charge).

COLOR STRANDING (Anna Zilboorg) Sunday Morning

Everything you need to know about two-colored knitting will start with how to slash without a sewing machine.  Then we'll practice two-handed knitting in the round, carrying two colors in one hand and carrying one color over long distances.  Finally, we'll knit backwards for those times when going in circles cannot be done.

Bring: A set of five short dp needles and two colors of yarn. (If needles aren't available where you are, I have a goodly number of size 4 sets. Just bring yarn that you can knit with size 4 needles.) Be sure the yarn colors contrast well so you can see what you're doing. Also bring along a darning needle and scissors.

Materials fee: $0

MAGIC LOOP (Pam Black) Sunday Morning

Materials fee: $0

LACE EDGINGS (Anna Zilboorg) Sunday Afternoon

Victorian lace edgings were used on almost anything. There is no reason that we cannot do the same. Furthermore, we can make them of wool to edge sweater sleeves or sock tops, of string to edge sweatshirts and cotton for tee shirts, as well as for conventional towels and the like.  They are fun to make, easy to carry and always pretty. (While learning to do them, you'll become a master at reading charts.)

Bring: Smooth yarn and short appropriate needles. Any weight from fingering to worsted is fine. Light colors are more visible.

Materials fee: $0
